Ashley Westwood has rubbished the suggestion Aston Villa are the worst Premier League side ever and still believes they can stay up.
A fifth defeat in succession against Tottenham at the weekend means Villa remain on 16 points, nine from safety with just eight games remaining to save themselves from the Championship.
Their current total is higher than the one managed by Derby during the 2007/08 campaign when they collected just 11 points, while the Sunderland side of 2005/06 went down with 15 points to their name.
Despite having already bettered their tallies, the Villans have still been dubbed the worst team to ever grace the top flight, a tag which Westwood feels is unjustified.
The Villa midfielder remains convinced the current Villa squad are good enough to stay in the Premier League but claims they just have not shown it yet this season.
When asked if he thought they were the worst team ever in the Premier League era, Westwood replied: “The facts are weÂ’re not. WeÂ’ve got enough points to show that weÂ’re not the worst, but itÂ’s still not nice to hear.
“We know weÂ’re good enough, itÂ’s just showing it every week.
“WeÂ’ve got what happened at Leicester last season to hang on to but weÂ’ve got to pick up points soon or it will be too late.”
