The Potters have been heavily linked with a move for the Zenit St Petersburg midfielder, who is due to fall out of contract at the end of the season, but have so far been able to do a deal.

Reports claim Mark Hughes will make another attempt to strike a deal in January, but Juventus appear to be in the box seat after just missing out on deadline day.

A deal to sign him fell through late in the transfer window due to the Russian club being unable to find an adequate replacement, but they have not given up.

After missing out on the 27-year-old during the summer, Juve CEO Giuseppe Marotta has revealed Juve are keen to either sign him in January or when his contract expires at the end of the season.

“We have an obligation to monitor all players,” Marotta explained on Radio Anch’io Sport.

“Witsel is in an easier position, facilitated by the expiration of his contract. We will try to take him in January or June.”

Stoke will have to move quickly and will be hoping that Witsel would prefer to play in the Premier League over Serie A.
