Summer signing Ashley Williams says Everton have “quality players” at the back and will form a strong defensive unit this season.
The defender joined Everton from Swansea during the summer following John Stones’ move to Manchester City but was left out of the squad for the 1-1 draw with Spurs in the opening round of Premier League fixtures.
Everton took an early lead but had to settle for a point at Goodison Park as the visitors grabbed a second-half equaliser.
Manager Ronald Koeman started with Ramiro Funes Mori, Phil Jagielka and Mason Holgate at the back last weekend and Williams, who is looking to make his debut against West Brom on Saturday, was impressed by his new team-mates – but still expects further improvement.
“We’ve got quality players and you saw that on Saturday,” he told the Liverpool Echo. “I thought the back three were magnificent. They conceded one, which can happen, but I thought all three of them did well.
“They’re top-notch players, even Mason you can see how good he is, and the other two have played a lot of games in the Premier League.
“The gaffer will try and organise it a little bit different to possibly last year, I’ll try and fit in within that and do my job and try and tighten it up as much as I can.”
