1956: The first final

Miguel Muñoz
As a player: Real Madrid in 1956 and 1957
As a coach: Real Madrid in 1960 and 1966

  • Captain of the Madrid sides that won the first two editions of the European Champion Clubs’ Cup, Muñoz was coach by the time the Merengues made it five in a row and was still in charge when they added a sixth six years later.

Milan’s 1963 Wembley joy

Giovanni Trapattoni
As a player: AC Milan in 1963 and 1969
As a coach: Juventus in 1985

  • The venerable Italian was a midfielder for the first two of the Rossoneri’s seven European Cup victories but has lifted the trophy only once as a coach, albeit in the immediate aftermath of the Heysel tragedy in 1985.

Cruyff’s Barcelona legacy

Johan Cruyff
As a player: Ajax in 1971, 1972 and 1973
As a coach: Barcelona in 1992

  • Perhaps the most revered exponent of the ‘Total Football’ that helped Ajax to three straight European Cups, Cruyff scored twice in the 1972 final. The Dutchman encouraged a similarly fluid style as coach of the Barça team that prevailed in 1992.

Ancelotti’s final memories

Carlo Ancelotti
As a player: AC Milan in 1989 and 1990
As a coach: AC Milan in 2003 and 2007; Real Madrid in 2014

  • A player in the last side to have retained the trophy – Milan’s vintage of 25 years ago – Ancelotti is also one of just two coaches, together with Englishman Bob Paisley, to have picked up three European Cups. He could make it four with Bayern München in 2017, which would make him the first coach to win with three clubs.

How Ajax won in 1995

Frank Rijkaard
As a player: AC Milan in 1989 and 1990; Ajax in 1995
As a coach: Barcelona in 2006

  • Rijkaard was Ancelotti’s midfield sidekick in the 1989 and 1990 finals, getting the only goal in the latter. He then claimed a third title – defeating Milan in the final – in 1995, his final game as a player, before guiding Barça all the way in 2006.

Guardiola’s 1992 win under Cruyff

Josep Guardiola
As a player: Barcelona in 1992
As a coach: Barcelona in 2009 and 2011

  • Part of Cruyff’s triumphant Wembley team of 1992, Guardiola enjoyed further success in the Camp Nou dugout, steering the Azulgrana to UEFA Champions League glory a year after being appointed to his first senior coaching job.

Zidane’s 2002 final winner

Zinédine Zidane
As a player: Real Madrid in 2002
As a coach:

  • Assistant to Ancelotti in 2014, Zidane now has the chance to emulate his former boss after taking over from Rafael Benítez in January. As a player, he had lost in the 1997 and 1998 finals with Juventus and won both the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship before at last tasting UEFA Champions League success in 2002 with a memorable winner for Madrid against Bayer Leverkusen in Glasgow.
  • His opponent in Milan on Saturday, Diego Simeone, has never won the European Cup but did play for Internazionale Milano in their 1998 UEFA Cup victory before coaching Atlético Madrid to the successor UEFA Europa League in 2012.
