Liverpool remain in negotiations with Newcastle over a deal for Georginio Wijnaldum as the Magpies hold out for £25m for the Dutchman.
The Reds are keen to sign the versatile midfielder and were hoping to strike a deal with Newcastle before they embark on their USA tour on Thursday.
However, they have yet to make an acceptable offer for the 25-year-old. The Magpies want at least £25m and are unwilling to receive that amount in installments – something Liverpool were keen to work out – so the possible transfer has hit a stumbling block at present.
Wijnaldum, who top-scored with 11 goals for Newcastle last season, is believed to be very interested in a move to Anfield to work under boss Jurgen Klopp, who is continuing to try and strengthen his side ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
Newcastle have suggested Reds midfielder Lucas or full-back Jon Flanagan could be part of the deal but they are players Klopp does not want to lose at this stage.
