Former Crystal Palace midfielder Shaun Derry believes the club can hang their goalscoring hopes on Connor Wickham.
Wickham joined the Eagles from Sunderland in the summer of 2015 for a fee in the region of £8million, however, he has struggled for form.
The former Ipswich man netted five times in his 21 Premier League appearances a total which was matched by Scott Dann, Yannick Bolasie and Yohan Cabaye.
However, Derry, who played for Palace over three stints, believes Wickham’s age means he still has time to improve and expects he will grow into his role with the Selhurst Park outfit.
Derry said: “Connor Wickham is still a young player. What Palace have got to make sure is that he’s a success. Centre-forward is such a major, major position, especially at Premier League level. When you’re trying to get goals from all the other angles, you’ve got wide players who can create but you need that centre-forward you can rely on.
“People will question could they and should they have gone into the market a little bit stronger, I’m not too sure.”
