Hamburg have confirmed the signing of Croatian starlet Alen Halilovic, who had been a target for West Ham.
Hammers boss Slaven Bilic had reportedly explored the possibility of landing his compatriot, hailed as the ‘Croatian Messi’, on loan from Barcelona for the coming season.
However, Bundesliga club Hamburg have won the race to land him after agreeing a permanent deal worth around £4.5million.
Halilovic has signed a five-year contract at the Volksparkstadion, although Barca retain a buy-back clause on the 20-year-old.
The playmaker leaves Barca having never made a league appearance for the club, but he did play 36 times in La Liga on loan at Sporting Gijon last term.
