West Brom made it ten points from their last four games as they edged to a 1-0 win against ten-man Manchester United at The Hawthorns.
Salomon Rondon grabbed the only goal of the match in the 66th minute after Juan Mata had been sent off after picking up two yellow cards in quick succession midway through the first half.
The result leaves United sixth in the table and struggling to clinch a top-four spot.
Louis van Gaal’s side started the match brightly and Anthony Martial had the first effort on goal although his 25-yard effort was saved by Ben Foster in the Baggies goal.
When Albion responded, Craig Dawson sent a header over the bar before Chris Smalling blocked Saido Berahino’s shot and Gareth McAuley headed inches wide.
Mata was booked in the 23rd minute for deliberately blocking a quickly taken free-kick and was sent off three minutes later for tripping the former United midfielder Darren Fletcher.
Dawson’s dipping 25-yard effort drifted just wide but United continued to look lively despite their numerical disadvantage and Martial did well to find Marcus Rashford whose low shot was deflected narrowly wide.
Jesse Lingard curled a shot just over the bar while at the other end of the pitch Berahino went close to breaking the deadlock.
When the only goal of the match did come it was from a surprising source, substitute Sebastien Pocognoli’s excellent first-time cross being controlled by Rondon before the Venezuelan striker lashed his shot from close to the penalty spot past David De Gea.
Tony Pulis’ side had few alarms in the closing stages as United ran out of ideas and Albion are now up to 11th in the Premier League table, 15 points clear of the relegation zone with only nine matches of the campaign remaining.
