Arsene Wenger has refused to confirm if he’s close to a deal for Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi or any other transfer targets.
The Gunners are believed to be on the verge of agreeing a deal for Germany international Mustafi and Wenger was hoping to land him for around £21million.
Centre-back is a pressing area of concern for the Frenchman as Laurent Koscielny is being given an extended summer break following his Euro 2016 exertions with France and Per Mertersacker is out for the rest of the year with injury.
Mustafi is a top target, while West Brom’s experienced defender Jonny Evans has also been looked at, but the boss has refused to confirm or deny the transfer speculation.
“We have not closed any deal with anybody at the moment,” he told reporters. “You speak about Mustafi. Is it Mustafi or anybody else – we haven’t concluded anything at the moment.
“I can understand that you are interested in transfers but I’m not ready to come out on any name.”
Wenger has been criticised for his lack of big summer transfers and he’s only brought in Granit Xhaka for around £30million from Borussia Monchengladbach and Bolton defender Rob Holding for just £2million so far.
However, aside from Mustafi he has been heavily linked with Leicester star Riyad Mahrez and Lyon forward Alexandre Lacazette and admitted over the weekend a striker was another transfer window priority.
