‘Wenger is a deluded old fart!’ – Arsenal fans criticise manager for dropping Granit Xhaka v Liverpool

Arsene Wenger came under a wealth of criticism last season for some crazy tactical decisions and team selections – and he has started this campaign in the exact same way.

Although the Frenchman was restricted by injury for the Premier League opener against Liverpool – with Rob Holding and Calum Chambers forced to start in defence – he decided to leave some key players on the bench rather than name them in the starting XI.

Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Santi Cazorla were all left out, but the most surprising omission was Granit Xhaka.

The £30 million summer signing was brought to the club to provide a defensive base in the midfield, and with the inexperience of the Arsenal centre-backs, this game would have been perfect for the Swiss international to start and show his ability to control the midfield third.

However, Wenger did not share this vision, and instead named Mohamed Elneny and Francis Coquelin as his holding pair.

It was a decision which did not go down well with fans of the Gunners, and many took to social media prior to kick-off to criticise their manager for his team selection.
