Arsene Wenger says he has been impressed by Arsenal summer signings Granit Xhaka and Rob Holding in pre-season.
The Gunners secured a 2-1 friendly victory over an MLS All-Stars team in San Jose on Friday and the duo were involved.
Xhaka moved to North London in a big-money move from Borussia Monchengladbach, while the capture of England Under-21 international Holding was a little more low key as he arrived in a £2million deal from Bolton Wanderers.
Holding started on Friday but Xhaka, who played for Switzerland at Euro 2016 earlier this summer, had to wait for his chance as he came on at the start of the second half, and Wenger was impressed by the performance of both players in San Jose.
On Xhaka, he said: “He did adjust very well. His passing was clean and technically he did well. Overall I believe his first game was encouraging.”
It had been thought Holding had been brought in as one for the future but Wenger indicated on the club website the 20-year-old could have a role to play in the senior side in the season ahead.
He said: “He has adapted surprisingly in a very good way. He reads the game well and understands what’s going on. He anticipates well and that’s a quality, at such a young age, that you don’t find a lot.”
