The 25-year-old was forced off after just 24 minutes in the 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium with what Wenger said could be a knee cartilage injury.

Welbeck only returned from a 10-month knee lay-off in February and now faces a race against time to be fit for the European Championship this summer.

England boss Roy Hodgson announces his squad on Thursday and will be keeping an eye out for news from Welbeck’s scan on Monday.

Wenger, though, refused to rule the former Manchester United striker out of the tournament.

He said: “I don’t want to say that, that’s too hard. Let’s be a bit more optimistic and wait for the scan tomorrow.”

Welbeck appeared to injure himself after attempting to tackle Bacary Sagna in the 23rd minute. He returned to the field after treatment but then pulled up again and left the pitch clearly frustrated.

Wenger told Sky Sports: “The medic told me it looks like a meniscus (injury). I hope they are wrong.

“Danny looked down and he knows. I tried to keep him on the pitch, I tried to get him on again and straight away he moved out. He’s not a guy who likes to move out so I am a bit worried.”
