Wayne Rooney to be dropped by Gareth Southgate for England v Slovenia clash

The 30-year-old Manchester United skipper played the full match in England’s dull 2-0 win over minnows Malta on Saturday.

While the Three Lions were never troubled, their performance was laboured and uninspiring with Rooney yet again criticised for his display.

Gareth Southgate deployed the 117-time capped Rooney in a deeper midfield role but there have been calls for the caretaker boss to leave him on the bench against Slovenia.

And barring any last minute injuries, Southgate will do just that with Rooney set to be axed from the starting line-up for tomorrow night’s World Cup qualifier.

Tottenham star Eric Dier is expected to partner Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson, England’s best player against Malta at Wembley, in midfield.
