It is safe to say Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has still never reached the potential which many believed he had when he burst onto the scene as a youngster at Southampton.
A prodigious talent, a move to Arsenal came soon after his debut, but he has failed to truly kick on at the Emirates Stadium and become the top class talent expected.
This season is likely to be a key one for the 22-year-old, as another campaign of mediocrity could see him out of favour at Arsenal, and the end of his elite club career.
And, thankfully, the England star is showing in pre-season he may have rediscovered the top of his game.
Taking part in the Gunners’ first 2016/17 friendly, Oxlade-Chamberlain netted the equalising goal in a 1-1 draw with RC Lens – sending a delighful chip over the keeper and into the far corner of the net.
It was a strike Lionel Messi would have been proud of, and it is just up to Oxlade-Chamberlain to start replicating these sort of skills in competitive matches.
