Crystal Palace defender Joel Ward was happy with the 1-0 victory over Colchester but says the Eagles have yet to reach their peak.
Eagles boss Alan Pardew named a strong side to the pre-season clash which was settled after just 10 minutes when Jordon Mutch grabbed the only goal of the game with a long-range effort.
Palace had to ride their luck at times as Colchester hit the woodwork and had a shot cleared off the line as they went in search of an equaliser that never came.
Ward admits there is still plenty of hard work to be done but was happy with the way the game turned out.
“There’s still a lot of time left and a lot of work to be done,” said the former Portsmouth full-back. “There are still things to work on, but the fitness is getting there.
“It is important to focus on being ready for the 13th [of August against West Brom] and making sure we are fit and at our peak for when that game comes.”
