Team-mate Jan Kirchhoff, who was outstanding in the middle of the park against Newcastle, also remains upbeat about Sunderland’s survival prospects.
He said: “We’re still above Newcastle and are two points behind Norwich having played a game less so it is still all in our own hands.
“We have to believe we can win most of our remaining games but as a team, we need to work on our intensity in the last few minutes.
“Good defending is always a mental thing and you have to stay focussed.
“In the derby, we lost just one big situation and Newcastle scored from it.”
