Aston Villa want a British manager to succeed sacked Frenchman Remi Garde, BBC Sport understands.

Former Leicester manager Nigel Pearson and ex-Manchester United boss David Moyes have been tipped as replacements.

But Burnley’s Sean Dyche and Hull’s Steve Bruce are possible candidates.

Former Villa player and manager Brian Little, who recently joined the club’s board of directors, will play a key role in the selection process but there is no rush to make an appointment.

The board’s eventual recommendation will need to be passed by the club’s American owner, Randy Lerner, before a final decision is reached.

Villa are heading for relegation from the top flight. With seven games remaining, they are bottom of the table and 12 points adrift of safety.
