Santiago Vergini is close to completing his return to Argentina with Boca Juniors after having a medical at the club.
The Black Cats have agreed a fee, thought to be around £1.5m, for the defender to return to Bocca and he is expected to put pen to paper on three year deal over the weekend.
Black Cats boss Sam Allardyce is looking to clear the wages of players who are not going to feature and Vergini fell into that bracket. He was expected to return to Getafe where he had been on loan but their relegation from La Liga put and end to those hopes.
He is looking forward to returning to South America, and said: “It is a great joy and I’m very excited. I hope to complete the move smoothly.
“I want to come and add something to the group, and contribute what I can.”
