Manchester United will release a statement at 13:00 (BST) but have already told manager Louis van Gaal that he’s being sacked.
United are expected to announce the Dutchman’s departure when the New York Stock Exchange, where the club’s shares are traded, opens later on Monday.
Van Gaal is two years into a three-year contract and was unaware of his impending fate until Saturday when he led his team to the FA Cup with a 2-1 extra-time victory over Crystal Palace.
Reports have suggested his wife texted him the news while he was still celebrating at Wembley, although the rumours had been gathering since Spanish newspaper AS broke the story on Saturday morning.
The League Managers’ Association sent a lawyer to United’s training ground on Monday morning to negotiate the severance terms.
There has been no news yet on Ryan Giggs’ fate but most of Van Gaal’s backroom staff are also expected to leave.
