Man Utd have told Wayne Rooney there will be no discussions on a new contract in the next 18 months unless his form improves.
The Red Devils captain has three years left to run on his current deal but is said to be keen to open negotiations on an extension which will take him up to the end of his playing career.
The 30-year-old is facing a fight to earn fresh terms after a string of poor performances on the field for both club and country.
Rooney’s showing in the season opener at Bournemouth came in for criticism from some quarters, despite the former Everton youngster netting in the 3-1 victory.
According to The Sun, Rooney has now been informed that unless his form improves drastically, there will be no talks on a contract before the start of 2018.
