Manchester United will reportedly have to fork out £14million to offload Bastian Schweinsteiger in the summer transfer window.
The 31-year-old Germany international midfielder only joined the Red Devils from Bayern Munich 12 months ago, but injuries and loss of form hampered him in his debut season at Old Trafford.
Louis van Gaal’s departure following the end of last season and Jose Mourinho’s subsequent appointment as boss has resulted in Schweinsteiger’s future being placed in doubt.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan has already joined United and the club are actively pursuing a £100million swoop for Juventus’ France international Paul Pogba.
That would leave Schweinsteiger well down the midfield pecking order in Mourinho’s plans, while French champions Paris Saint-Germain are believed to be weighing up a swoop to sign him.
But it is being reported that the player is settled in Manchester and would like to stay and fight for his place in the starting XI next term.
Therefore if United insist on getting him off the books, they could have to pay up the final two years of his £7million-a-season deal.
