Jose Mourinho is reportedly looking to take defenders Fabinho and Raphael Varane to Manchester United in the January transfer window.
The Red Devils’ boss only managed to sign Eric Bailly to bolster his defensive options in the summer as he also splashed out a world record fee to bring in Paul Pogba to his midfield, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan and striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic also joined.
Mourinho was keen to snap up at least one more defender ahead of Wednesday’s 11pm deadline but failed in his efforts and is now already looking ahead to the winter.
Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian will get the first half of the season to try and impress Mourinho, but a swoop for Monaco’s Brazilian right-back Fabinho is believed to be in the planning following some tentative enquiries last month.
And France international central defender Varane remains on Mourinho’s wanted list, despite the player pledging his future to Real Madrid when United were linked over the summer.
The chances of signing the 23-year-old appear to be even more remote at the moment given that he has started all three of Los Blancos’ games this season and is clearly in the plans of coach Zinedine Zidane who persuaded him to stay in the Spanish capital.
