UEFA.com’s Champions League team of the week

18 Mar

Goalkeeper: Jeroen Zoet (PSV Eindhoven)
Brilliant in the 0-0 home draw with Atlético Madrid, the PSV goalkeeper did it again in the Spanish capital, repelling the hosts with some magnificent saves and so nearly becoming the shoot-out hero.

Defender: Juanfran (Atlético Madrid)
Atlético have built their run on defensive solidity and their sixth clean sheet in eight games in this competition took them through, with Juanfran also providing the winning penalty.

Defender: Aleksandar Dragovic (Dynamo Kyiv)
Dynamo had too much to do to turn around a 3-1 deficit at Manchester City but they can take credit from their 0-0 draw in England with the Austrian excellent at the back.

Defender: José María Giménez (Atlético Madrid)
The Uruguay defender was a rock for his team, denying Luuk de Jong aerially and on the ground, and also showing enormous courage and technique to take the first sudden-death penalty which he put away with ease.

Touré display v Dynamo

Defender: Gaël Clichy (Manchester City)
Clichy got up and down the left with impressive energy and was strong and ever alert at the back, most notably denying Andriy Yarmolenko an opening before half-time.

Midfielder: Yaya Touré (Manchester City)
Ended the evening as captain and led from the front with a couple of trademark bulldozing runs in the second period to give City much-needed impetus.

Midfielder: Paul Pogba (Juventus)
A cool fifth-minute finish from Pogba gave Juventus the initiative at Bayern München and the French midfielder was not just an attacking threat but tireless in the defensive cause as Juve came so close.

Midfielder: Kingsley Coman (Bayern München)
That Juve lost out owed much to the introduction of the teenager they have loaned to Bayern: 60th-minute substitute Coman helped make both goals to force extra time, then got the fourth himself in the 4-2 win.

Suárez and Neymar’s goals

Forward: Antoine Griezmann (Atlético Madrid)
Griezmann gave Zoet one of the greatest tests the PSV goalkeeper will ever face before finally beating him in the shoot-out, sending the custodian the wrong way.

Forward: Luis Suárez (Barcelona)
Suárez has 43 goals in 42 appearances this season and the one he got against Arsenal was up there with the best – an acrobatic volley few others would even have considered, let alone executed.

Forward: Neymar (Barcelona)
Neymar weighed in with the opening goal at Camp Nou after being set up by his Uruguayan accomplice, the Brazilian showing the necessary coolness in the box.
