Here are the top transfer-related stories in Tuesday’s newspapers…


Arsene Wenger is braced for disappointment in his attempt to sign Jamie Vardy.  Vardy, 29, had promised the Arsenal boss an answer on Monday after the Gunners triggered the £20m release clause in his Leicester contract. But he did not get in contact, leaving the Londoners fearing the worst. Leicester have offered the striker a new contract and he could now stay with the Foxes. (Daily Mirror)

But Arsenal have been given a huge boost in their chase for Henrikh Mkhitaryan with Borussia Dortmund set to admit defeat in their fight to keep him. The German club have failed to persuade the 27-year-old Armenian to sign a new deal. He has flatly refused to commit himself without a release clause being included in any fresh contract. West Ham are sounding out the possibility of signing Arsenal’s Theo Walcott for a fee in the region of £25million. (London Evening Standard)

Arsenal defender Calum Chambers is closing in on a deal to spend next season at Watford. Chambers will consider a year on loan as he attempts to revive his career and rekindle his talent. (Daily Mail)

Chelsea are to step up their attempts to sign Álvaro Morata and hope to make progress this week before the start of the European Championship. The deal is complicated by the fact that Real Madrid intend to activate a £23m buy-back clause in the Juventus striker’s contract, albeit only with a view to selling him on immediately at a profit. The European champions would seek nearer to £40m for him from Chelsea. (Guardian)

Chelsea have seemingly been handed a blow in their attempt to secure the signatures of two transfer targets after Roma insisted they have no intention of selling Radja Nainggolan orAntonio Rudiger this summer. (London Evening Standard)
