Here are the top transfer-related stories in Friday’s newspapers…

Rafa Benitez is edging closer to the Newcastle hotseat. The Spaniard has been offered the Toon position. And Benitez, 55, is now ready to seal a deal once Steve McClaren is finally sacked. (The Sun)

However, there are concerns on Tyneside that Benitez is having second thoughts. Benitez remains the favourite to take charge of Newcastle, but sources close to the former Liverpool manager have denied reports in Spain he has already agreed a three-year contract and there are fears he may turn down the job. (Daily Telegraph)

Steve McClaren has been left furious about his appalling treatment from Newcastle chief Lee Charnley. The ex-England boss will meet his MD after today’s training session and it is expected he will finally be told he has been given the bullet. (The Sun)

Jose Mourinho has confirmed he WILL start a new job in July. The Portuguese coach has been out of work since December when he was sacked by Chelsea for a second time. The 53-year-old been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United if executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and the Glazers decide to part company with Louis van Gaal a year before his contract is due to end. Antonio Conte’s proposed move to Chelsea is being held up by his insistence on bringing a huge backroom team with him to Stamford Bridge. The Italy coach is supported by a technical staff of 18 people at present and it is understood he wants at least ten of them to follow him to Chelsea. (The Times)

As many as nine players could leave Chelsea this summer as the club face the bleak prospect of a world without the Champions League. Eden Hazard, Oscar, Nemanja Matic and Loic Remy are almost certain to move on.
