Transfer report: Napoli move to tie down record-breaking striker Gonzalo Higuain as Arsenal and Chelsea plot summer moves
Napoli are ready to offer Gonzalo Higuain a new contract – in an attempt to ward off interest from Arsenal and Chelsea.
The striker has enjoyed a stunning year in Italy, finding the net 36 times to break the record for the most goals scored in Serie A in a single season.
Arsenal and Chelsea are now eyeing a move for the Argentina international, who will have two years to run on his contract come the summer.
But, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, Napoli will hold talks with Higuain to extend that deal until 2020.
The Italian club are ready to offer the 28-year-old a contract which would be worth over £100,000-a-week, making him one of the best paid players in Italy.
Higuain is open to signing that deal, but he is expected to ask for his release-clause to fall from £75m to £47m.
