Tottenham close to Wembley Stadium deal for 2017… rivals Chelsea won’t be involved

Work on their new 61,000- seat ground means thousands of seats may have to be removed from the North Stand of White Hart Lane next season to reduce its capacity.

Tottenham said in a statement to season ticket holders last night: “In order to comply with all Uefa stadium requirements for staging Champions League fixtures, we are discussing options that include the possibility of playing our European games away from White Hart Lane next year.”

London rivals Chelsea also want to use Wembley while Stamford Bridge is being expanded, but a groundshare is unlikely.

Chelsea’s plans for a new £500m home are not as advanced as Tottenham’s.
