“We put in a great effort and showed character”
“I am very pleased with the reaction of the side in a game of passion, which was very competitive. We put in a great effort and showed character.”
England striker Daniel Sturridge, meanwhile, may have regretted appearing to complain about playing wide in Liverpool’s last match, when Klopp announced his side.
Sturridge found himself even further away from the centre of the action when the game got under-way at White Hart Lane.
He was on the substitutes’ bench, with Philippe Coutinho fit to start – but not fit to finish when it came to the game’s first chance.
That was after only five minutes, when Firmino set up Coutinho for what looked like a routine close-range finish.
But Spurs keeper Michel Vorm blocked the Brazilian’s shot – a great save which brought the Tottenham fans to their feet.
Coutinho, though, should have buried that one. The scene was set from there, however, for an open, attacking match between two of the Premier League’s big guns.
