Andros Townsend insists Newcastle’s senior players have to raise their game if they are to have any chance of avoiding the drop.
Townsend, who arrived from Tottenham during the January transfer window, says he never anticipated being in so much trouble at this stage of the season, and says it is down to the players to drag themselves out of trouble.
Newcastle are six points away from safety with seven games left to play and the £12million signing says now is the time they have to perform.
“It’s difficult to say what I thought would happen when I signed,” the 24-year-old winger said. “Obviously, when I joined, there were a lot more games left and we were a lot more positive.
“But this is football, and this season, as you’ve seen, anything can happen. We’re in the position we’re in, and we need character now.
“We need the senior players to stand up and be counted, and drag us out of the situation that we’re in.”
