Newcastle are ready to offer Andros Townsend a new deal in an attempt to fight off interest from Crystal Palace.
Eagles boss Alan Pardew is keen to take advantage of Newcastle’s relegation to the Championship by making a move for the winger, but the Magpies are determined to keep hold.
Palace are ready to pay the £10.5million that would trigger a release clause in the player’s contract that he signed in January, and allow him to walk from St James’ Park.
However Newcastle are hoping a bumper pay rise will convince Townsend to turn his back on a quick return to the Premier League in favour of staying with Rafa Benitez’s men.
Reports claim Townsend is on £55,000 a week but Newcastle are prepared to offer him £75,000, which would make him the highest paid player in the Championship.
Palace are still expected to make a move and Townsend will have a decision to make in the coming weeks.
