Tony Pulis hails West Brom star: He can play until he’s 40!

28 Aug

The Northern Ireland international turns 37 in December but is showing no signs of slowing down at the highest level.

Indeed, having scored twice already this season, defender McAuley is arguably performing at a better level than at any time in his career.

Certainly, West Brom boss Pulis has no doubts about the former Ipswich and Leicester man’s longevity – and is adamant there is plenty more to come from him.

That is why he gave McAuley, capped 65 times by his country, a new one-year deal last April.

And it is why he refuses to rule out the idea of the Baggies central defender joining a very select group of outfield players who have graced the Premier League at the ripe old age of 40.

To date only Teddy Sheringham, while he was at West Ham, Ryan Giggs at Manchester United, Kevin Phillips in his Crystal Palace days and Gordon Strachan during his spell with Coventry have defied Father Time long enough to manage that feat.

And ahead of today’s home clash with Middlesbrough, Pulis predicted evergreen McAuley can do the same.
