Tony Bellew wins the WBC cruiserweight title with third round KO at Goodison Park

Tony Bellew won the WBC cruiserweight title with a third-round knockout of Ilunga Makabu at Everton’s Goodison Park ground.

Liverpudlian Bellew was floored himself in the opening round, but fought back to hit Makabu with a left hook and right uppercut before landing a barrage of punches to claim the belt.

Around 15,000 fans were present to witness the fight, at which Everton supporter Bellew entered to the Z-Cars theme usually played to greet his football heroes.

But it was Bellew who put in a heroic display at the famous old stadium, beating southpaw Makabu, who had won 19 of his 20 previous pro fights, 18 of them by knockout.
