This Newcastle signing won’t have a role in survival battle: Rafa Benitez is not impressed

Former head coach Steve McClaren was alarmed at his lack of match fitness and new boss Benitez is equally underwhelmed.

Doumbia arrived at St James’ Park desperate to make his mark in English football after a frustrating spell at Roma.

But his hopes of triggering a clause in his contract to make the Toon deal permanent looks doomed with the striker needing to play in seven of Newcastle’s remaining eight games.

While Doumbia has little chance of being involved against Norwich, Benitez is considering handing a start to Dutch international Siem de Jong while fit-again Papiss Cisse is also pushing for a recall.
