Rooney will skipper England against Malta in a midfield role and remains his country’s talisman, but Walcott is convinced he is not alone.
He added: “You can see there’s a change. The group is tight, but a few members are starting to come out and step up.
“When a few do that, you get more who want to be like that, be better than that.
“We train like that at the moment. You can see, even though they’re young, there are a lot of players in the Premier League playing at a consistently high level.
“We’ll be judged on results, but it’s about having that confidence behind you that. We can be brave and I look forward to being part of this England team.”
