The Albion striker, who is currently in Austria with the rest of Tony Pulis’ squad, was emailed the contract offer by West Brom’s director of football administration Richard Garlick last week.

But Berahino has already informed the club he will not sign the extension, which opens up the prospect if the ex-England Under-21 striker leaving on a free in a year’s time.

The player is understood to know that clubs in Germany and Spain are showing an interest and could offer him a pre-contract as soon as they would be eligible to – in January.

But it could equally be a move to force Albion’s hand when it comes to negotiations with the Premier League clubs that are known to want him, including Stoke City and Crystal Palace.

West Brom still value Berahino at £20million, despite his contract having less than 12 months left to run, but no Premier League club is prepared to pay that amount and the striker is threatening to walk away for nothing when the time comes.
