Chelsea are reported to have failed with a late move for Argentine defender Ezequiel Garay before he joined Spanish side Valencia.
The Blues ended up bringing David Luiz back to Stamford Bridge in a deal worth £31million but it has been reported that Garay was also a target for Antonio Conte.
Garay only joined Valencia from Russian side Zenit Saint Petersburg just before the window closed and reports in Spain have suggested Chelsea’s interest held up the move.
The Blues were willing to pay more than Valencia for Garay but the player had his heart set on a move to Los Che, and so ruled out a late switch to England.
Garay, who has had previous spells in Spain with Racing Santander and Real Madrid, was keen for another stint in La Liga.
Chelsea also pushed through a deal for Marcos Alonso on deadline day, taking their total spend on defenders to a reported £53million.
