Southampton have rekindled their interest in Swiss centre-back Fabian Schar after watching him in action for Hoffenheim.
Saints sent a delegation to Germany last weekend to watch the 24-year-old defender as Hoffenheim overcame Mainz to boost their chances of avoiding relegation.
Ronald Koeman was keen on Schar last summer after putting the then Basel star on a list of potential replacements for Toby Alderweireld, but he surprised Saints by signing for Hoffenheim in early June.
Koeman was still confident of keeping the Belgian centre-back at that point and eventuallly moved to sign Virgil van Dijk from Celtic late on in the transfer window.
But Saints’ interest in Schar remains and another attempt to sign him could be made easier if Hoffenheim are relegated from the Bundesliga this term.
