Guidolin’s position had appeared in doubt but the club confirmed on Wednesday that the Italian, who arrived mid-season and guided the club to safety, had signed a two-year deal.

Jenkins has confirmed talks with former manager Brendan Rodgers but ultimately the board decided continuing with Guidolin as manager was the best way forward.

“There were a couple of talks with Brendan, and with one or two other people, but that is just us doing our jobs and seeing where we go with that,” Jenkins said, as reported by the South Wales Evening Post.

“We were looking at options and that’s an obvious one. Brendan is Brendan.

“He has been here for a few years. He moved on and did a good job at Liverpool.

“He was an option, obviously he was an option, but we had to make decisions based on what we felt was right at the time. Timing is a big one.

“We are going through a period where Francesco Guidolin is doing a good job and has just helped us to probably a mid-table finish in the Premier League, again.

“We had a board meeting and the decision was unanimous. That’s unusual sometimes, but we were all saying the same thing.”
