Crystal Palace have been priced out of a move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Mario and will have to look elsewhere.
The Eagles have been tracking the Portugal international for some time but Sporting have no intention of selling and have put a huge £55million release clause in his contract.
Such a clause has put an end to Palace’s chances of striking a deal, while Manchester United, who are also reported to be interest, are even likely to turn their noses up at such a figure.
The 23-year-old, who can play in the centre of midfield or as a number ten, has impressed for Sporting this season when firing home five goals, while he has also chipped in with eight assists.
Mario will be hoping to shine for Portugal at the European Championships this summer but Palace fans will have no chance of seeing him at Selhurst Park unless Sporting drastically lower their valuation.
