Sam Allardyce has called on his Sunderland team to secure Premier League survival on Wednesday and avoid a nervy final day.
The Black Cats welcome Everton to the Stadium of Light this week knowing a victory would extend their stay in the top flight into a 10th season, while also relegating their biggest rivals Newcastle with a game still to play.
The Toffees have little to play for and were well beaten by league champions Leicester at the weekend, boosting the hopes of the Wearsiders that they will not provide stiff opposition for the last home game of the season.
Allardyce feels Sunderland find themselves in the perfect situation to avoid a nervy final-day trip to Watford thanks to their win over Chelsea at the weekend, and he is eager not to let the opportunity slip away.
“Chelsea was one of those results that everyone looked at and thought how have they done that?” said Allardyce. “But it is the dream scenario.
“It is something that you strive for. We all have to try to help the players grasp it while they’ve got the chance and not let it slip.
“It’s one more big commitment if you like and one more big performance. Then we can all sleep a little easier after that.”
