Sunderland set to send forgotten man Adam Matthews to Bristol City on loan

Sunderland outcast Adam Matthews is on the verge of joining Championship strugglers Bristol City on loan.

The 24-year-old arrived from Celtic in a £2m deal during the summer but has not appeared for the first team since August.

Matthews is desperate to earn a place in Wales’ squad for the European Championships and is now set to join City in a bid to play regular first-team football.

The Robins will be hoping the defender’s arrival will boost their chances of beating the drop, with Lee Johnson’s side currently just five points clear of the relegation zone.
