Sunderland ramp up striker hunt after Jermain Defoe injury blow

“We don’t want to take any risks with Jermain”

Robbie Stockdale

Assistant boss Robbie Stockdale said: “It’s too early to say at this stage but we don’t want to take any risks with Jermain.

“We will deal with it once he’s had a scan, then we’ll be able to make an assessment.”

Sunderland’s German midfielder Jan Kirchhoff is set to open talks on extending his contract after entering the final 12 months of his current deal.

Out of favour defender Adam Matthews has rejoined Championship side Bristol City on a season-long loan.
