The Black Cats had previously failed to offer their thanks in previous statements, but the club’s new CEO said: “It’s been a turbulent couple of weeks with Sam moving on to England, and everybody at Sunderland wishes him the best of luck there.
“We thank him for his efforts after his work last year and the tremendous run at the end of last season. He’s the reason we’re still in the Premier League so he deserves great credit and we wish him well.
“Last week dealing with the FA was a difficult situation for everyone concerned at the club.”
Bain has been in post for a little over a month. He replaced Margaret Byrne, who resigned after carrying the can for Sunderland’s disastrous handling of Adam Johnson’s child sex conviction earlier this year.
