Summer signings Jason Denayer and Didier Ndong could make their debuts for Sunderland when they face Everton on Monday.
The duo completed deadline day moves to the Stadium of Light and should be in the squad for the visit of the Merseysiders, Ndong having been cleared to play despite reports he would have to serve a two-match ban for the red card he collected playing for Lorient against Caen last month.
Ndong is likely to start on the bench but loan signing Denayer could be involved from the start having played for the Under-23 side in the EFL Trophy last week.
Fellow new arrival Victor Anichebe will not be involved though as he continues to work on his match fitness.
Midfielder Lee Cattermole may make his return having taken part in training last week, while Jan Kirchhoff could make his return to Premier League action having had a run out in the EFL Trophy last week.
Vito Mannone (elbow), Seb Larsson (knee), Fabio Borini (thigh) are all still unavailable.
Manager David Moyes believes it is imperative Sunderland pick up three points against his old club Everton having taken only one point from their first three matches thus far.
Moyes told reporters: “We need to pick up three points. We have played well in certain periods of the games played – I don’t think we have ever been out of the games.
“We have been competitive and close in all of the games, but what we don’t want is any hard luck stories.
“We want to say ‘let’s get the game won, let’s get some wins under our belt’.
“I hope the crowd play a big part in the game against Everton and give the team a real backing because we are going to need it.”
