Fabio Borini’s late equaliser denied Connor Wickham the chance to down his former club after he had netted twice.
In an evenly-matched encounter, it was the hosts who had first taken the lead when Dame N’Doye’s debut goal for the Black Cats came about after a huge slice of fortune when his long-range effort took a big deflection off Scott Dann.
It was then former Sunderland man Wickham who scored twice in six minutes in the second half to put Crystal Palace in control at the Stadium of Light.
His first came a minute after the hour when he fired home a brilliant effort that left Vito Mannone with no chance in the Sunderland goal.
Wickham’s second on 67 minutes came through a left-footed volley from close range after Dann had headed the ball on at the far post.
The Eagles thought they had picked up a big victory but it wasn’t to be when substitute Borini managed to beat Wayne Hennessey from an improbable angle from the right hand side.
