Spurs say the swelling around Kane’s right foot makes it difficult to set a return date, but Janssen will be given an extended run in the side in his absence.

The Dutch striker opened his account for the club from the penalty spot in the rout of Gillingham in the EFL Cup but he is under pressure to get going in the Premier League where he is yet to find the back of the net.

“Janssen has already shown the supporters he has a big passion to play, they have been excited to see him on the pitch and the energy he brings,” Pochettino said.

“It’s true this is a big opportunity for him to confirm all that we expect from him and he has to be ready – now that Harry is injured, it is true it has opened the door for him to play more.”
