Hughes is eager to add some strength to the heart of his defence and Zouma has been linked with a move to either Stoke or their Premier League rivals West Bromwich Albion.
The Potters are said to be leading the race for the France international and a season-long loan deal could be completed before the end of the week if talks go well with the defender.
Speaking about the interest in the 22-year-old, the Welsh tactician told the Sentinel: “There is genuine interest. We’d like to make it happen if we can. The boy himself has to make a decision. We are one of many interested parties but we’re very hopeful. We’re still doing a number of deals.”
Zouma’s potential arrival would cast doubt over a permanent deal for Bruno Martins Indi, who impressed on a season-long loan at the bet365 stadium in the previous campaign.
The Holland international was said to be on the verge of completing a move but, according to reports, he is still in Portugal training with parent club Porto and there is now said to be interest in him too from Schalke.
