Steven Gerrard pays cheeky tribute to John Arne Riise as former Liverpool ace retires

“And when I first saw myself in the mirror and admitted just that for myself, I have to step out completely.

“Perhaps the joy and the necessary motivation sometime back, what do I know, but now it’s not big enough. I’m sorry. Especially facing the team, the whole club and all the supporters.”

Riise, renowned for his rocket-like shots, enjoyed a hugely successful seven-year spell at Anfield, making over 200 appearances for the Reds between 2001 and 2008.

The defender was part of the side that famously overturned a three-goal deficit to beat AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final.

And Steven Gerrard was quick to pay tribute to his former team-mate.
