Joe Hart and Raheem Sterling are set to miss England’s friendlies with Germany and the Netherlands after being injured in Manchester City’s derby defeat by Manchester United on Sunday.

The pair could be out for four weeks, making them serious doubts for the Champions League quarter-final meetings with French champions Paris St-Germain.

Winger Sterling, 21, limped off during the 1-0 loss with a groin injury.

Hart was taken off on a stretcher in the second half with a calf problem.

The 28-year-old goalkeeper was hurt after clearing a poor backpass from Martin Demichelis.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini, asked whether they would miss England’s games in Germany on Saturday and against the Netherlands at Wembley on 29 March, said: “Both of them have muscle injuries.

“Raheem is his groin while Joe is his calf – and I don’t think muscle injuries are one week. Normally this is three or four weeks.”

The first leg against PSG is in Paris on Wednesday, 6 April with the return leg at home on Tuesday, 12 April.

It increases the problems for City, who also have captain Vincent Kompany out for the foreseeable future with a calf injury and now stand only one point ahead of Manchester United and West Ham United as they remain in fourth place.

‘Nervous’ Demichelis not to blame – Pellegrini

Marcus Rashford’s winner at Etihad Stadium left City 15 points behind Premier League leaders Leicester City, having played a game less.

Pellegrini added: “I’m not happy with the performance of the team but I didn’t think we deserved to lose.

“We are still in fourth place and we missed clear chances to score. We have another 24 points to play for and every game is different. It was a mistake for our goal and I don’t remember a lot of options for Manchester United other than that.”
