Stam set to be new Reading manager

Jaap Stam playing for Manchester United

Former Manchester United centre-back Jaap Stam will face ex-Chelsea midfielder Roberto di Matteo, the new manager of Aston Villa, in the Championship next season

Reading are set to name ex-Manchester United and Netherlands defender Jaap Stam as their new manager.

The 43-year-old will take over from Brian McDermott at the Championship club after his second spell in charge of the Royals lasted just six months.

A coach at Ajax last season, he had been favourite to succeed McDermott.

Stam, part of United’s 1998-99 treble-winning side during his three years at Old Trafford, is set to be unveiled at a press conference on Monday.

He will become the club’s first non-British manager when he takes charge of a Reading side who finished 17th in the Championship last season.
